Sibling Fights: Normal or Too Much?

Fights between siblings are developmental work. When parents should intervene – and when not.

All Parents

Siblings between 3 and 7 years old argue on average 3.5 times per hour – a University of Illinois study found. For parents that's exhausting; for children it's an important training ground for social skills.

Why Conflict Is Actually Useful

Through sibling fights, children learn: negotiation, compromise, perspective-taking, emotion regulation, and conflict resolution. These skills transfer to friendships and later relationships. Children with siblings often show better social skills in studies.

When Not to Step In

When shouldn't parents intervene? During verbal disagreements, arguments over toys (as long as no child is physically overpowered), and in conflicts children can resolve themselves. Stepping in deprives them of practice.

When to Step In

When should parents intervene? In cases of physical violence, systematic bullying of a sibling, when one child is repeatedly the victim, or with large age gaps that make a fair exchange impossible.

The Helpful Script

Helpful strategy: instead of playing referee ('Who started it?'), describe the problem neutrally ('You both want the same toy') and encourage the children to find a solution ('What could you do so it works for both of you?').

Key takeaways

  • 1Preschool siblings fight about 3.5 times per hour on average.
  • 2Fights train negotiation, empathy, and self-regulation.
  • 3Step in only for violence, bullying, or severe imbalance.
  • 4Never compare siblings – it breeds rivalry, not motivation.

Practical tip

Important: never compare siblings ('Your sister can do it!'). Such comparisons amplify rivalry and harm self-worth. Every child is unique and deserves to be seen as an individual.
